I’m very excited that members of the Cookbook Club are having such a good time that they’re organizing bonus events beyond our regular monthly cookbook event! Anthony organized an all-dessert event using the BraveTart cookbook by Stella Parks. The cookbook is a celebration of classic American desserts, from brownies and cherry pie to recreations of childhood favorites like Oreos and Nutter Butters.
Taking advantage of the awesome summer weather, we did this event in the early afternoon as a pool party, thanks to Fiona graciously hosting us in her fabulous backyard with pool. Food and a pool party is my idea of a perfect summer afternoon!
The Menu
Erin made Blueberry Soda. The recipe called for strawberry or peach, but blueberry is great too! She used a slightly lower syrup to club soda ratio, which I thought was good as I don’t drink a lot of sugary beverages. The blueberry flavor came through really nicely.
Erin also made a bonus pavlova topped with blueberries. It wasn’t from the cookbook, but it was tasty. I really liked the light creamy flavor, though Erin said that she has used other recipes which came out with a much better, crisp shell.
Shayna made Glossy Fudge Brownies. These did indeed have the shimmery crust that the recipe advertised, and good chocolate-y flavor. I do however like a chewy brownie, and these were a bit soft for me.
Jeff made Magic Key Lime Pie. He didn’t have a mixer, so he did everything by hand! His hard work paid off though, as the crust had a nice crunch and the creamy filling was a good balance of tangy and sweet.
Drew made Frankie’s Coconut Cream Pie. This was one of my favorites – it had a much nuttier, toastier flavor than other cream pies I’ve eaten. But Drew said he has a different coconut cream pie recipe that he prefers, so now he’s going to have to make that one in order for us to compare!
John made Homemade Oreo Cookies. The wafers had a good intense cocoa flavor, but I found them to be a bit on the hard side, which made the cream squeeze out when I bit into one. They probably would have been good for dunking in milk, which I’ve always found overly softened traditional Oreos.
Fiona made Buttermilk Biscuits with Strawberries and Cream. The biscuits were nice and light, and overall this is just a great combo of ingredients, though I found that the strawberries were too tart. It’s hard to control how sweet your strawberries might be.
I made Lemon Mousse. You can’t really go wrong with a creamy, lemony dessert, and several people said they really liked it. But I make a similar lemon dessert which requires less steps and less ingredients and tastes pretty comparable, so I wasn’t impressed with this one.
Laura made Homemade Nutter Butter Cookies. The only thing these were missing was the peanut shape of the store-bought ones. These were great and definitely brought back fond childhood memories.
Anthony made White Mountain Layer Cake with Marshmallow Buttercream. The cake was rich and almost creamy thanks to the coconut milk it contained. I thought the Marshmallow Buttercream was too sweet, and Anthony said it was a bit of a pain to make, resulting in his kitchen being covered in marshmallow!
Anthony also made Double-Vanilla Ice Cream. I enjoyed the flavor, though I prefer a denser ice cream and found this one to be too soft. It felt melty immediately upon scooping, and became liquid very shortly after arriving on my plate.
The Verdict
My favorite items from BraveTart were the homemade versions of store-bought classics. These tasted good and were a fun nostalgic treat. And while it was a fun idea to do an all-dessert event, I have to say that I think all that sugar at once was just too much, especially before jumping into the pool! We were brave to try it, but I’d suggest picking just a couple desserts to follow a meal, and don’t look for any tart recipes in the cookbook because despite the name, there aren’t any.
