Saturday, June 9 – 11:30am
In June, we partnered with the LA Bread Bakers to do a super fun outdoor pizza event using their awesome wood-fired oven! We used The Elements of Pizza cookbook by Ken Forkish for dough and sauce recipes as well as topping combinations, but also got creative with all kinds of other combos of our own invention.
What a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon! We had several tables of people rolling out dough, spreading sauce, and adding toppings. The oven was so hot that it only took a few minutes to cook a pizza, so once we got going the pizzas were coming out fast and furious. So fast, in fact, that it was impossible for me to take pictures of each pizza and keep track of who made what, while also helping with assembly. We made over 30 pizzas, and I did my best to capture as many as I could between stuffing slices into my face.
The Menu
Many people split duties between bringing dough, sauce, and toppings, so it’s difficult to credit people for their particular pizzas. Also due to the general pizza frenzy I wasn’t able to try every one of the 30-something pizzas (though I gave it my best shot!). So I’m going to depart from my usual write-up and just show you the pizzas from the cookbook that I was able to recognize and snap pics of.
And to give you a sense of the glory of this pizza extravaganza, here are some of our other pizza creations:
Plus, what meal is complete without dessert? We had several dessert pizzas, and a pound cake topped with homegrown honey!
The Verdict
Any time that you have the opportunity to make large quantities of pizza in an outdoor wood-fired oven, I highly recommend you take it. The Elements of Pizza provided a great basis for pizza-making, and then we were able to branch out from there to all sorts of our own combos. The feast was fantastic, but the awesome oven and environment were equally essential elements in making this a super fun pizza party.
