Saturday, April 28 – 6:00pm
For April’s cookbook, we used Gjelina: Cooking from Venice, California by Travis Lett. We’d done several cookbooks by local chefs recently and wanted to branch out, but there was such a strong demand for this cookbook that we kept it in the lineup. Gjelina is a very popular local restaurant known for its rustic cooking of fresh California ingredients. I’d had great food at the restaurant and was excited to see if we could recreate the experience at our own dinner party! (more…)
Sunday, March 25 – 5:00pm
For our March cookbook, we did Hey There, Dumpling!, by Kenny Lao. It’s all about, you guessed it… dumplings! It includes the traditional dumpling fillings, as well as some unique takes that we were interested to try, plus some salad and noodle accompaniments. And my favorite part of the book was a handy dumplings and dips chart for all the ways to mix and match, because half the reason to eat dumplings is for the dips! (more…)
Saturday, February 24 – 7:00pm
For February, we chose a blog instead of a cookbook. We decided on https://doriegreenspan.com a month in advance, only to find that a couple weeks before our event she had redesigned her site, making it much more difficult to access all of the recipes. Not wanting to change things up at the last minute, we stuck with Dorie’s site, but also added the option to use one of her cookbooks. (more…)
Sunday, January 28 – 6:00pm
Our first cookbook for 2018 was Sunday Suppers at Lucques by Suzanne Goin. Lucques is a Los Angeles restaurant serving market-driven California cuisine. It is most known for its constantly changing prix fixe Sunday dinner menus, which Goin has compiled into a cookbook. The recipes are arranged into four-course menus and organized by season. (more…)
Sunday, December 3 – 11:30am
We did our December Cookbook Club gathering earlier in the month to account for holiday travels. The cookbook was Everything I Want to Eat by Jessica Koslow, chef owner of LA’s very popular cafe Sqirl. We were lucky that Colin offered to host and could accommodate a big crowd, because we had a great turnout and so much food that we completely filled one table with savory dishes and a second with sweet dishes. (more…)
Sunday, November 12 – 6:00pm
For November, we wanted to do a cookbook by a local LA chef. We chose The Mozza Cookbook: Recipes from Los Angeles’s Favorite Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria by Nancy Silverton, Matt Molina, Carolynn Carreno, and Mario Batali. The book includes recipes from both Osteria Mozza and Pizzeria Mozza. (more…)
Saturday, October 21 – 7:00pm
For our second ever Cookbook Club event, we had done Yotam Ottolenghi’s Plenty. But that was back when we were tiny, and well over a year ago. Since then, we have been joined by many more foodie friends and gotten lots of requests for another Ottolenghi cookbook. So last month we used Jerusalem, by Yotam Ottolenghi and Sami Tamimi. The cookbook explores the cross-cultural cuisine of their home city. (more…)
Sunday, September 24 – 3:30pm
To take advantage of the great end-of-summer weather, we decided to do a beach party, and in that vein selected Sam Choy’s Polynesian Kitchen as our cookbook. Sam Choy is Hawaii’s most recognized chef, and in this book he collects recipes from the islands of the South Pacific. (more…)
Saturday, August 26 – 7:00pm
This month instead of a cookbook, we did a blog. And not just any old random blog, but the blog of one of our own Cookbook Clubbers – Brad’s BelgianFoodie.com! His recipes strive to be healthy and are often (though not exclusively) vegan, and are influenced by more than 25 years of living in Belgium. (more…)
Sunday, July 23 – 6:00pm
For July’s party, we used Ina Garten’s most recent release Cooking for Jeffrey: A Barefoot Contessa Cookbook. The book is filled with recipes for the dishes most often requested by the people she loves, especially her husband Jeffrey over the course of their 48-year marriage. Ina Garten is an American chef who taught herself culinary techniques using French and New England cookbooks – perfect for our cookbook club! (more…)
