After a long hiatus (thanks COVID) and a couple meh attempts at virtual gatherings (Cookbook Club just isn’t the same when you don’t get to eat all the yummy food), we are back! Our last cookbook before the pandemic shut us down was Milk Street: Tuesday Nights, so to try to pick back up where we left off 15 months ago, we did Milk Street: The New Rules for our reopening book.

Well, with the COVID-19 shelter-at-home order looking like it’s going to be in place for awhile, we’ve had to come up with new ways to enjoy the company of others who love cooking and eating. How do you share a meal while social distancing?… with a virtual Cookbook Club! People chose from 3 recipe options selected from Bon Appetit recommendations for “when there’s nothing in the fridge”:
Sunday, March 1 – 6:00pm
Our February cookbook was Milk Street: Tuesday Nights by Christopher Kimball. Winner of the James Beard Award for best general cookbook, every recipe is meant to be quick and easy enough for cooking in the middle of the week. Some dishes are categorized into Fast (under an hour), Faster (45 minutes or less), or Fastest (25 minutes or less), and others fall into themes like Supper Salads or Easy Additions. (more…)
Saturday, February 22 – 7:00pm
For February’s cookbook, we used The Silver Spoon. We’d previously done the Joy of Cooking, and now we’ve done Italy’s version with this bible of Italian home cooking that includes over 2,000 recipes. Originally published in Italy in 1950 by Italian design and architectural magazine Domus, a select group of cooking experts were commissioned to collect hundreds of traditional Italian recipes and make them available to a wider modern audience.
Sunday, January 26 – 6:00pm
Our first cookbook for 2020 was Casablanca: My Moroccan Food by Nargisse Benkabbou. In it, Benkabbou shares 100 recipes for Moroccan meals. She also has a popular blog, http://www.mymoroccanfood.com/, which includes her family’s recipes and her cross-cultural creations. We made a combination of dishes from her cookbook and blog. (more…)
Sunday, December 15 – 6:00pm
As has now become tradition, we wrapped up 2019 with a year-in-review event – people could choose a recipe from any of the cookbooks we have used in the past year. It could be a recipe that had been previously cooked and loved, or one that had been on the list to try. Such a fun way to look back at our 2019 cookbooks and remember all the good eats! (more…)
Saturday, November 2 – 6:00pm
In what has now I think become our Thanksgiving tradition, we skip the cookbook and instead use our November cookbook club event to celebrate Friendsgiving. Each person brings a dish they have been wanting to test out, or one that is their Thanksgiving specialty. I am especially thankful for the truly wonderful things that Cookbook Club has brought to my life – tons of great food and more lasting friendships than I could have imagined. (more…)
Saturday, October 26 – 7:00pm
Our October cookbook was Aarti Paarti, by Aarti Sequeira. She simplifies traditional Indian recipes in order to make the flavors and techniques approachable for the US market. (more…)
Sunday, September 22 – 6:00pm
For September we returned to the LA area, using the Baco cookbook by Josef Centeno, chef and owner of several LA restaurants, including namesake Baco Mercat. Centeno uses spice blends and sauces to flavor dishes, and of course includes a recipe for the flatbread that is used to make the Baco sandwiches which the cookbook and restaurant are named for. Saturday, August 24 – 6:00pm
We decided August would be a good time to take a culinary trip to Spain, with Anya Von Bremzen’s The New Spanish Table. Inspired by her extensive travel through the country, her recipes cover regions all over Spain and come from a variety of sources from local people to well-known chefs. (more…)
